Hunterâs Way
âI think I found them,â Jess whispered.
She crouched in a cluster of bushes, muscles tense and brow furrowed. She strained to see through the foliage. Faint voices reached her ears.
Markus came to crouch beside her. His cloak trailed on the ground, giving glimpses of his knife as it rippled. âAbout time.â
âKnew it would pay off.â Jess gave him a punch on the shoulder. âAnd you thought we lost them!â
âWe donât know itâs them yet,â Markus replied. He left the bushes and darted closer.
Jess followed. She noted the countless marks that gave the Frostreavers awayâbroken leaves, scuffs in the snow. The further she went, the more they swelled. She swore under her breath. âThereâs a lot of them.â
The forest thickened, a wall of feather-leafed bushes stretching across their path. She didnât need to part them to know what waited on the other side.
âSo itâs settled,â a voice said. âWe wait here until our time to strike.â
Jessâs pulse quickened. Part of her urged her to part the bushes and get a glimpse of how many Frostreavers there were, but she forced herself to stay still. Canât be careless.
âDo we have the resources to wait that long?â another asked.
âI planned for that ahead of time.â
There was that voice again. It made a shiver run down Jessâs spine. It sounded smooth yet laced with venom. She risked parting the bushes enough to peer through.
Frostreavers sat in a wide ring. The closest was a dozen paces. Her heart stopped for a second, but she relaxed as she realized they were facing away. Arrows lay in the snow beside themâbarbed for hunting gameâand axes sat embedded into treestumps nearby. A few frostfeathers, which she recognized from her hunting days, perched on their shoulders.
Markus exchanged glances with her. Jess held a finger to her lips, then motioned for him to follow her.
âAnd how long must we wait here? Suppose they donât arrive?â
âThey will,â the voice replied. Jess strained to see who it belonged to. âIâm not one to leave things to chance.â
Jess reached a cluster of smaller bushes that let her glimpse further into the camp. Her eyes came to rest on a tall figure with scar-riddled arms.
Theron. Jess hesitated. Theron addressed the Frostreavers, pacing as he did so.
âWe have enough land to pitch your tents, and it's secluded enough we wonât have any visitors.â
âAnd if a hunter was to stumble upon us?â
Theron paused. âYou know the answer to that.â
Something in his words made Jessâs skin crawl. She retreated a few paces into the forest. Markus joined her. âWhat do we do? I donât like the look of so many of them.â
Jess nodded. âWhatever theyâre doing, itâs big. Wilf was right.â
âWhat do we do now?â Markus checked over his shoulder. The talking stopped for a second, but when they continued, he relaxed.
âWe gotta know why theyâre doing this,â she replied. âWe canât go back to Wilf empty-handed.â
âIf they see usââ
âThey wonât.â Jess flashed him a sudden smile. âWeâre too good for that.â
With her instincts on high-alert, she crept back to the edge of the camp.
